Windows Blue hits Milestone 1 as screenshot leakes online

New reports claimed that Windows Blue just recently hit milestone 1, which is believed to be half way through the OS's development cycle. Milestone 2 will be the final build before Windows Blue RTM's, which is expected to happen in August of 2013.

It also appears to be true that Windows Blue will run version 6.3 of the NT Kernel, and not 6.2 as some originally believed. This is because 6.3 will tell applications what version of Windows it's running, 6.1 is Windows 7, 6.2 is Windows 8 and 6.3 is Windows Blue.

From this latest kernel bump, it certainly looks as though Microsoft will be delivering some significant changes. The screenshots themselves do not reveal what kinds of changes we could be seeing, but TheVerge‘s report also suggests Windows Blue is designed for a new fleet of hardware types, including the increasingly popular 7 and 8-inch tablets.

Windows Blue is expected to make an appearance sometime later this year, and will begin to ease users into the annual update system.

Obviously, Microsoft refuse to talk about Windows Blue, which means most details are still scarce. Nobody knows what Blue will include as an update, or whether the update will be free.

HTC One unveiled; features 4.7-inch 1080p display, 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600, UltraPixel camera, Android 4.1.2 with Sense 5.

HTC’s new flagship phone sets new standards for the company, for both external and internal hardware. Unlike most of its previous phones, the new smartphone uses aluminum and glass as its main materials for its new unibody design. The HTC One features a 4.7-inch super LCD 3 display, capable of 1080p output and protected by the ultra-strong Gorilla Glass 2, a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor running at 1.7 GHz, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel “UltraPixel” camera, 2,300mAh battery and two generous storage options: 32 or 64GB. The new phone is powered with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. The One also bears the distinction of being one of the first smartphones to feature Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 600.

The new unibody construction manages to cram a 2,300mAh Li-polymer battery, 802.11 a/ac/b/g/n Wi-Fi radios, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. There are also speakers with built-in amps, as well as a beefed-up camera branded as HTC UltraPixel that is capable of gathering 300 percent more light than a standard smartphone camera, suggesting that HTC will market this device, at least partially, as a multimedia powerhouse.

The HTC One is powered with an IR blaster, integrated into the power button, allowing the smartphone to act as a remote for most TV’s and set-top boxes. In addition, HTC Sense TV, a new app built into the device, acts as an interactive program guide. To compliment the brand new hardware, the HTC One runs on top of HTC’s Sense user interface, which now sits at version 5 with tons of new refinements over previous releases.

The HTC one will be available beginning in March, from 185 mobile operators across 80 countries, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint in the United States.

Windows Blue Confirmed

Finally, Windows Blue looked to be confirmed by Microsoft as they post a new job opening on the Microsoft Careers Website.

According to the post, The Core Experience team in Windows Sustained Engineering (WinSE) is involved in making improvements to the start screen, application lifecycle, windowing and personalization. Windows Blue will "build on and improve" these OS components.

it stated :- "We’re looking for an excellent, experienced SDET to join the Core Experience team in Windows Sustained Engineering (WinSE). The Core Experience features are the centerpiece of the new Windows UI, representing most of what customers touch and see in the OS, including: the start screen; application lifecycle; windowing; and personalization. Windows Blue promises to build and improve upon these aspects of the OS, enhancing ease of use and the overall user experience on devices and PCs worldwide."

Blue is the codename for the next wave of Windows-related operating system and services updates from Microsoft. There will be a Blue update to Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows Phone 8 and the Windows Services like Hotmail and SkyDrive and more.

On the Windows and Windows Phone fronts, Blue is expected to include new features and even new programming interfaces designed to bring the different flavors of Windows closer together, from an app model/development model perspective.

Windows Blue appears to be a wide-spread update that Windows 8 and Windows Phone will receive, there is no exact date for the upgrade as of yet, but many are speculating something to be released in mid-2013.

Skype Video Messages for Mac, iPhone and Android

Microsoft Launched a new Video Messages feature for Skype. The company was reported working on some new features for some months now, having previously revealed it a little early, and it debuts on iOS, Android, and Mac. Designed for online and offline messaging, Video Messages lets Skype users send up to three minutes of video to each other.

The feature works on Android and iOS by using the font facing camera, with an option to switch to the rear. You can send up to three minutes of video to users who are either online or offline and the video will be delivered in the chat part of Skype just like how a normal conversation appears.

In response to windows and windows phone compactibility issues and availability; here is what a skype spokesperson said :- "We’re pleased that there’s interest for Video Messaging to come to Skype for Windows and Skype for Windows 8, We’ll let you know when we expand the service to the platform. We tested the feature out on all available platforms and it seems to sync the video messages just as you'd expect." He added -:“We will have send capability in Windows by end of April. In the meantime, we continue to test this new feature in its early release.”

US and UK Skype users get first crack at Video Messages, with users in other countries expected to get the feature soon afterwards. Skype Video Messages is rolling out as part of Skype Premium Services, and after 20 free messages you’ll have to subscribe to the service for $4.99 a month to have continued access to the feature.

Ubuntu Phone OS to be availabe for download on February 21

Installable Ubuntu Phone images for the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 handsets will be available to download from next week. Two pre-compiled images will be available for anyone with a supported handset to download the OS.

The preview will allow fans and app developers have the chance to get to grips with the Ubuntu Phone experience ahead of its official release later this year. The tool will be similar to nexus 7 installer which allows you to install Ubuntu OS on your Android tablet.

"Our platform supports a wide range of screen sizes and resolutions. Developers who have experience bringing up phone environments will find it relatively easy to port Ubuntu to current handsets" - Canonical stated in their blog post.

This ‘milestone’ will be significant for the Ubuntu Phone project as it will mark the first that developers can dive in to the code. As an open-source project, developers will be able to fix, refine and add features, as well as its port to run on other devices.

HP Reported working on Android Smartphones and Tablets

HP is looking into getting back into the mobile hardware game, according to a new report being confirmed from their own sources. The company is apparently still looking to get back into the hardware game after a hiatus spanning a couple of years, however, with a new tablet featuring an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, which ReadWrite pegs for an imminent announcement, and is also considering Android-based smartphone for future development.

After HP CEO Meg Whitman took over, she announced that the company would ultimately offer a smartphone to keep up with the fact that for many in the developing world, such a device is now their first and maybe only computer. That launch isn’t planned for 2013, however, Whitman later stated.

But back in late 2011, Whitman did make statements to the effect that HP could create webOS-powered tablets again in 2013. While these reports suggest webOS is likely off the table, HP could stick to Whitman’s target plan of fielding a tablet device based on a mobile OS this year, but one based on Android instead of its own product, which it has since open-sourced.

HP is holding private meetings during the Mobile World Congress in Barcleona, Spain, later this month, and it might show off the new Android tablet there behind closed doors.

Samsung's Galaxy S4 to come with an S4 mini and a smart watch

The Galaxy S4, aka GT-I9500 or Altius, has been developed under the name Project J and could be announced in March. Well Project J now consists of a total of three devices, based on information about upcoming accessories.

Samsung's Project J mini, codenamed Serrano, hints towards a smaller smartphone which would be the Galaxy S4 mini. This isn't exactly an outrageous claim since Samsung has launched the Galaxy S3 mini to sit alongside the full size Galaxy S3.

SamMobile says the Galaxy S4 mini uses almost the same accessories as the Galaxy S4 but won't feature wireless charging. It is likely to be a cheaper and lower spec version of Samsung's new flagship smartphone.

The third device is called Project J Active, codenamed Fortius, and hasn't been full decided upon. It will come with accessories including an arm band, bike mount and punch suggesting it could be a smart watch. Samsung might call it the Galaxy Watch but alternatively it could be a smartphone similar to the Galaxy Xcover 2.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is tipped to feture an Exynos 5 Octa 8-core processor, 4.9in Full HD screen, wireless charging, a 13Mp camera and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.It has been suggested that Samsung will announce the handset outside of MWC (Mobile World Congress) on possibly 15 or 22 March. It will then be released and go on sale some time early in April.

Apple reported working on iOS smartwatch

Having conquered the desktops, music libraries and phones of millions, the company is reported developing on a smart watch that would run on the same iOS operating system that powers iPhones, iPads and iPods. All the more intriguing is the notion that the smartwatch may well be made of curved glass, with possible suppliers being the likes of Corning who could utilise one of their newest products: Willow Glass. The company’s CTO – Pete Bocko said, “Right now, if I tried to make something that looked like a watch, that could be done using this flexible glass. ”

Capabilities that Apple is exploring for wearable devices remain unclear. But analysts and investors who have been tracking the field predict the company would release a product with many different functions and that the device would work closely with the iPhone. The watch could also be used to make mobile payments, with Apple’s Passbook payment software.

Apple has been exploring the area for some time, according to the people briefed on the effort, and has hired employees with backgrounds in sensors and related technologies in recent years.

The New York Times are just one body who claim to have knowledge that such an accessory could be under construction according to ‘people familiar with the company’s explorations. They stated ,”such a watch would operate on Apple’s iOS platform and stand apart from competitors based on the company’s understanding of how such glass can curve around the human body. “

Microsoft Office is coming to Linux in 2014

The Linux focused site Phoronix is reporting that Microsoft is looking at developing Office for Linux in 2014. This is based on a conversation the writer had at the Free Open Source European Meeting in Brussels, where he was told, 'Microsoft is having a "meaningful look" at a full Linux port of Office thanks to Linux showing signs of commercial viability.' - Larabel

Larabel is often right about things like this. But regardless of whether Office for Linux comes to fruition, the idea of Microsoft even thinking about it and potentially giving such a windows rivalry app free of charge may come as a surprise. When someone asked Twitter, Larabel replied that he wouldn't be surprised if there are "many doubters" but challenged them to "wait and see." He points out that Microsoft has offered "unlikely sponsorship" to Linux projects in the past, albeit on a relatively small scale, and that the rumored Office for Android may also function as a stepping stone. Still, there'll need to be a few more meetings in underground parking lots before we're totally convinced.

Linux has certainly been getting more serious support recently, with the game platform Steam now available on the Ubuntu distribution of the open source operating system. Linux is also increasing in popularity among government organizations, attracted by its cost cutting possibilities.

PlayStation 4 Retail Price Revealed

Japanese website the Asahi Shimbun reports that Sony's new gaming console will cost 40,000 Yen - which translates to about £270. UK gamers will have to factor in VAT, which adds a whopping 20 per cent to the price, taking the possible UK figure to around £325.

This is the first real inkling we have as to how much the PlayStation 4 might cost. At $428, consumer are more likely to make the purchase, and with Microsoft also purportedly bringing the Xbox 720 at some point this year, it’s vitally important for Sony to give current PlayStation users a reason to remain loyal when they decide to upgrade their hardware.

The cheapest PlayStation 3 variant now coats 24,980 Yen in Japan and $269 in the US, and although age are both contributing factors to its current low price, it’s fair to say a ~$400 cost at launch for a PlayStation 4 would be gratefully received.

The new console is also expected to have a touchpad controller, as well as an eight-core x64 AMD processor (codenamed 'Bulldozer'), 8GB of RAM, 2.2GB of video RAM, four USB ports that use the new high-speed USB 3.0 standard, a Blu-ray drive, a hard drive of 160GB, an Ethernet port, and both HDMI and optical outputs. However specs for the next-generation Xbox are rumoured to be comparable, with insiders suggesting that it will also pack 8GB of RAM, HDMI connectors and USB 3.0.

The launches are important for both Sony and Microsoft, as gamers have moved away from consoles since the Xbox 360 and the PS3 debuted. More and more people have shifted to the tablet and the smartphone as a gaming platform. Analysts expect that tablets and other mobile devices will match the power and graphics of today's games consoles within a few years.

iPhone 5S and 5" iPhone 6 to be Launched in 2013

We all know by now that Apple and iPhone rumors are a regular occurrence at this time of year, with the majority of the hear-say turning out to be exactly that. However, history has also educated us to the fact that more often than not there is never any smoke without fire, meaning that a lot of iPhone related rumors do turn out to have some substance behind them. The latest speculation is coming directly from Chinese sources who appear to be adamant of the existence of a new iPhone 5S and a larger 5-inch model that will be released under the iPhone 6 moniker.

Earlier analyst speculation held that Apple will release an iPhone 5S and a revamped version of the iPhone 5 in June or July. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted last month that the new S model would resemble the current model with a few improvements, including an A7 chip for faster performance and a fingerprint sensor. A larger screen size for an iPhone 6 might attract consumers smitten with Samsung's 4.8-inch Galaxy S3 and 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2.

Manufacturers like Samsung have proved that smartphones with larger, vivid displays definitely do have a place in the smartphone industry, but whether or not Apple would ever go down that route remains to be seen.

Xbox 720 Rumours

Microsoft has yet to announce a successor to the Xbox 360, but lots of rumors and speculations have surfaced about the company's next home console. The information is based on sourced, reasonable speculation, rumored features and alleged leaks.

Microsoft's upcoming console codenamed Durango, but known as the Xbox 720, will require a constant internet connection and block second hand games from being used. According to sources, the new Xbox 720 console will need an internet connection to function. Microsoft will be committed to online functionality with a new version of Xbox Live, but physical games will come with an activation code rendering them useless to a second user.

These physical Xbox games will apparently be manufactured on 50GB Blu-ray discs meaning the console should be able to play Blu-ray films. Microsoft's next game console could feature Siri-esque voice control. Popular voice activated personal assistants like Siri and Google Now require a connection to the cloud, where the voice recognition and processing is actually performed.

Improved functionality in this area will supposedly include wake on voice, natural language controls, and speech-to-text. "We understand that Microsoft is also investigating scenarios where a Kinect sensor will detect individuals in a room and suggest appropriate multiplayer games after a user queries the Xbox using voice."

The Edge's source also confirmed rumoured specifications for the Xbox 720 are accurate. It will use an AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics card and 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

Microsoft is expected to show off the Xbox 720 at this year's E3 convention, but might announce the console before hand in March.

Ubuntu OS phones to hit stores in October

It's been said that Ubuntu's open-source operating system would be available on smartphones by the end of the year, and now it's confirmed that consumers can get their hands on such devices in October.

The founder and CEO of Canonical Mark Shuttleworth said that Ubuntu OS smartphones will be available in October and app developers will get access to the OS later this month.

Ubuntu OS is long a favorite open-source platform for computing. The OS will use the same drivers as Android smartphones and will also be able to run on entry-level smartphones. It will use native apps, which means that developers can create a single app for both the desktop and the PC. This will let users easily move between devices. The OS also favors swiping gestures to reveal navigation strips and overview pages.

Windows Software to run on Android soon

Phoronix reports that an Android version of the open-source Wine software – which is used to run Windows-based apps on Linux, Mac OSX and BSD – is currently in development. The Android version was briefly demonstrated by Wine's original developer Alexandre Julliard after the FOSDEM 2013 talk in Brussels on Monday.

While Wine is coming to ARM and there's quite a lot of interest there, CodeWeavers is quite interested and hopeful for the success of Intel x86 Atom CPUs for tablets," Phoronix said. "If Android gains traction on x86-based tablets and other mobile devices, CodeWeavers has a lot of commercial opportunities for pushing the running of Windows software on Android.

According to the Wine website, the software doesn't simulate internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator. Instead, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly. This supposedly eliminates the performance and memory penalties associated with VMs and emulators, allowing the user to "cleanly" integrate Windows applications into a non-Windows desktop.

Wine originally began in 1993 as a way to run Windows 3.1 programs on Linux. It took 15 years before Wine finally reached v1.0, the first stable release, in 2008.
